Nopalitos Galeria Presents:
Icons & Visions Arnold Puentes & John Dick-Peddie
November 29th – December 28th, 2019

Icons and Visions

Nopalitos Galeria proudly presents: Icons & Visions – a Two Man Exhibition; Arnold Puentes and John Dick-Peddie.

Icons & Visions

Artists across time have created icons in their work through visions. Their visions result in objects or images that have a special meaning attached to it. These icons can symbolize many things including venerable images. In this collection, the artists seek to communicate their vision of this world, and perhaps others. The work reflects notions of culture, or place, as well as concepts of open questions, contemplated, to arrive at visual statements.

In Icons and Visions, the artists believe that by challenging our perceptions, new truths begin to emerge allowing ourselves to reflect on the past without prejudice, contemplate the present without bias, and perhaps project the future with greater optimism.

About The Artist

Arnold Puentes was born in Silver City, New Mexico and spent his earliest childhood years in the nearby mining town of Santa Rita. He attended schools in Santa Ana, California and Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was first exposed to art at an early age by his father, and he credits his first art teacher and mentor in middle school for developing his passion for creating art. Arnold began his formal art training in high school. Awarded a Kiwanis scholarship to New Mexico State University, he undertook a painting major under the instruction of painter and muralist Ken Barrick, sculptor Ed Vega, and designer/painter Dr. Trini Lopez. In 1980 he traveled to Mexico City with the aid of a research grant to study methods, materials, and techniques of mural painting. He graduated from NMSU with a BFA in Painting in May 1981 and relocated to Albuquerque, and has since painted and produced several community/civic murals. His work has been shown at multiple art shows and at the Arizona Latino Art & Cultural Center (ALACC). The art is influenced by the great Mexican muralists and he sees it as primarily cultural but always “challenging the conventional”.

About The Artist

John Dick-Peddie was raised in Las Cruces and became friends with Arnold at Mayfield High School and college years at NMSU. As is life, after receiving their degrees, their paths went different directions both professionally and geographically. Their friendship however remained intact to date. John was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012. He has since started incorporating some of the challenges experienced by the disease into his art in an attempt to give the viewer a better feel on how the disease affects mind, body, and spirit. In 2014 John started experimenting with the addition of neon colors added to the painting. The attempt is to create a painting within a painting. He has coined the procedure as the “J.D.P. technique it appears to be quite unique.

Origins – “A New Start”

Are the origins of self, family, place, culture, in the mind, in the heart, in a southern (New) Mexico town, or in the cosmos? Recognizing our origins allows us to reconnect with what once was, and now what it has become. Originally, cultural events revolved around traditions, or passages, or perhaps even rituals. Time has pushed much of our understanding of origins back to a point where we no longer recognize, or remember these beginnings. We have often forgotten the origination of our fondest relationships, our love of our town, and our love of our culture.

“Origins” looks at the ancestral genesis and our hometown, valley, and (New) Mexican/Las Cruces culture. Friends since grade school, an origin of its own, the artists will exhibit a combination of local landscapes, and cultural originations. The art is homage not only to the fertile valleys and various locales of Dona Ana County and Las Cruces, but also to the fertile beginnings of indigenous/cultural myths, stories, and images. The exhibit is meant to resurrect and revive hearts and minds of the viewing community both young and old. By reconnecting to the “Origins” of our beloved home and culture, the art may give rise to a new awareness of our existence and our home. It is a fresh start to old concepts of time and place and will provide an experience to be seen, realized, known, and to understand that what was, still is – a place of origin.
